Yeast-derived collagen is the first cosmetic ingredient in the country to be certified vegan.

11/05/2021

Mitsui Chemicals Fine Chemicals, Inc. (located in Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Satoshi Tsuruda) is pleased to announce that its yeast-derived collagen1 used as an ingredient in cosmetics has acquired vegan certification,2 a first in Japan.

To date, most collagen used as an ingredient in cosmetics has been derived from animals such as fish, but the use of non-animal-derived collagen is increasing, mainly overseas, due to growing public awareness of ethics and environmental protection in recent years.

Having recently acquired the first vegan certification of an ingredient in Japan for its yeast-derived collagen (powder and liquid), which is not derived from animals and is produced using a unique fermentation method, the Company will be proposing its use as a cosmetic ingredient widely, both domestically and internationally.

The molecular weight of non-animal-derived collagen is less than that of animal-derived collagen, making it easier to dissolve and manipulate. Its odor is also less strong.3

Mitsui Fine Chemicals will continue to expand its range of environmentally friendly cosmetics raw materials and contribute to a sustainable society.
